In mediaeval times, there were not many modern astronomical instruments or observatories as we know them today. So Jantar Mantar was basically an astronomical observatory of the Rajputana Empire. It was used specifically for research purposes. This observatory was mainly used to measure the distance or position of planets and other celestial bodies at a particular time.
This beautifully constructed marvel consists of 19 main instruments. These 19 instruments serve different purposes. Jantar Mantar became famous for its Samrat Yantra, which is considered the largest sundial in India. This architectural marvel is in the Jaipurian architectural style. This beauty was built by Raja Sawai Jai Singh 2. It is said that the king was very fascinated by such things and hence built this place. Today, this place is crowded with tourists throughout the year. A visit to this place is a must if you want to visit Jaipur.
