 Ajmer southwest of Jaipur is an oasis in the green hills. Ajmer is surrounded by the Aravali Hills and the expensive lake Anna Sagar.


Ajmer is on major road and rail links and is a trading centre for salt, mica, fabrics and agricultural produce. Agriculture is the main occupation in the region. Maize, wheat, barley, oilseeds and pharmaceutical products are grown here. The region also has hosiery factories, cotton gins and pressing plants. It is known for its handicrafts, cloth weaving and dyeing.

During the Urs festival, which commemorates the death anniversary of Saint Moinuddin Chishti, devotees from all over the world flock to the city. Ajmer has also been selected as one of the heritage cities for the HRIDAY (Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana) programme of the Government of India.

Adhai Din ka Jhopra, Ana Sagar Lake, Foy Sagar Lake, Ajmer Government Museum and Taragarh Fort are some of them. Ajmer is also home to Mayo University, one of the most prestigious boarding schools in India.

Shopping in Ajmer is a pleasant experience as the city is famous for antiques, jewellery, charming gold and silver jewellery in modern designs, colourful bandhini and jodhpuri jutis that are layered. A speciality to take home from here is Ittar, a special form of local perfume.

the town, 13 km from the Hindu pilgrimage town of Pushkar, is the most important site for Islamic history and heritage. One of the most important Muslim pilgrimage centres in India is located here, the shrine of Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti, the founder of the Chishtiya order. Besides Islamic culture, Ajmer is also a major centre of the Jain religion with the amazing Golden Temple built in 1987.
