The Pushkar Lake is located amidst the Aravalli Mountains in Pushkar, Rajasthan. It is surrounded by 52 bathing ghats (a staircase leading to the water) and over 500 temples, and is considered the most sacred lake for Hindus in India, where pilgrims flock in large numbers to take a holy dip.
According to Hindu theology, there are five sacred lakes, collectively called Panch Sarovar: Mansarovar, Bindu Sarovar, Narayan Sarovar, Pampa Sarovar and Pushkar Sarovar. The Pushkar Sarovar or lake is the most significant of them. It is believed that the lake originated where the petals of Lord Brahma's lotus fell when he destroyed Vajra Nabha.
The lake is located in the oldest city of Pushkar, often referred to as 'Tirtha-Raj' or King of Pilgrims, whose existence dates back to the 2nd century BC. Century BC. Millions of devotees flock here believing that the famous waters of Pushkar wash away the sins of a lifetime.
On the holiest day of Kartik Poornima, a dip in the lake is considered equivalent to the benefits of performing yajnas (fire sacrifices) for several centuries. On the periphery of Pushkar Lake are various temples and ghats that add to the sanctity of the place. They make the place a veritable paradise for religious people. It is said that around 500 temples surround the lake, some of which were destroyed and later rebuilt.
The most important among them is the Brahma temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Other temples near the lake are the Varaha Temple, the Savitri Temple and the Gayatri Temple. There are 52 ghats near Pushkar Lake, which are an integral part of the lake. Ten of these ghats, used for holy baths and rituals, have been declared 'Monuments of Sacred Importance'. These include the Varaha Ghat, the Dadhich Ghat, Saptarishi Ghat, Gau Ghat, Yag Ghat, Jaipur Ghat, Karni Ghat and Gangaur Ghat, Gwalior Ghat, Kota Ghat
The ideal time to visit Pushkar Lake is between October and March, when the winter season begins. The temperature then is 22 degrees Celsius, which is not too cold.
