The Indian School of Martial Arts, premier training center for the ancient martial art of Kalaripayattu
The Indian School of Martial Arts is a leading training center for the ancient martial art of Kalaripayattu. The ISMA or Kalariyil Dharmikam Ashram was established in 1983 and has been a place of healing and rejuvenation for many. This was under the guidance of Mr. Balachandran Nair, who comes from a family of warrior-healers. He believes that Kalarichikitsa (Kalari treatment) originated from Siddhavaidyam (science parallel to Ayurveda), Dhanurveda (mother of Ayurveda), and Olagranthas (manuscripts on dry palm leaves). It was developed specifically for practitioners of this art form. Its teachings are based on the 108 nerve pressure points (Marmas) in the human body.
Instead of modern medical parameters, more importance is given to intuition, which has developed after years of experience and self-observation in this field. ISMA has a three-story complex with its own Kalari arena. A 600-year-old massage table built from a single tree is located in the complex. The meditation hall and the rooftop garden are other interesting places here. There are simple facilities for those seeking accommodation and the opportunity to read ancient manuscripts. It is truly an educational and invigorating experience.
